ICI permit values in Hamilton increased by over half in the August-January period year-over-year. The commercial sector led the way with permit values increasing by 125%. Industrial permits had a slight decline of 7%. Institutional permit values were up by 12% and surpassed $100 million. The education sector was a major driver of institutional permits over the past six months. Two major school projects were issued permits in January: a secondary school valued at $27 million, and a primary school for $10 million. There has also been activity at McMaster University, including a $40 million RFP that closed in December.

The next few years are looking promising for Hamilton’s ICI construction industry with several major projects coming up. The RFQ for Hamilton’s LRT closed on March 29th, with an RFP anticipated for the summer. The LRT project is currently valued at $1 billion. Major water/wastewater work is coming as well. The City of Hamilton’s Woodward Ave Water Treatment Plant closed bidding on March 16th. The City of Hamilton also recently announced that on April 18th they will release the RFQ for the Pier 8 portion of the West Harbour redevelopment project. The Pier 8 development includes 1,500 residential units and 13,000 square metres of commercial and institutional space.
