Total ICI permit values in Central Ontario increased by 19% in the first quarter of 2017 compared to the first quarter of 2016. This was the only region where in the first quarter, permit values increased in all three sectors. Central Ontario’s industrial sector had the biggest increase, up 28%. There were major industrial projects in both Hamilton/Niagara and Kitchener/Waterloo areas, including a $30 million permit for the General Electric project in Welland, and a $23 million permit for an addition to the Frito-Lay facility in Cambridge.

Commercial permit values had a 19% increase. Institutional permit values were up by 13% overall in Central Ontario, but diverged between the Hamilton/Niagara and Kitchener/Waterloo areas. In Hamilton/Niagara, institutional permit values increased by 88%, while in Kitchener/Waterloo values decreased by 23%. Institutional activity in Hamilton/Niagara was driven by the education sector, particularly two major school projects in the City of Hamilton.

The Central Region includes: Waterloo Region, Guelph, Hamilton, Brantford, Burlington, Niagara Falls, St. Catharines, Barrie, and Peterborough
