B-PER-North-TITLE-1

Total ICI permit values in Northern Ontario were up by 39% in the first quarter compared to first quarter 2016. As previously forecasted, the institutional sector is driving activity in Northern Ontario led by post-secondary education projects. Institutional permit values more than doubled in the first quarter, and institutional permits account 60% of total ICI permits in the region. Post-secondary permits issued in the first quarter include a $15 million permit for Lakehead University’s Centre for Advanced Studies in Engineering. Although industrial permit values increased by over 200%, industrial permit activity is still very weak at less than $7 million overall for the first quarter. This was the second-lowest industrial permit value total for any quarter in the past five years. The only quarter that was lower was the Q1 2016 which is what Q1 2017 is being compared to in the table. Northern Ontario’s commercial permit values declined by about one-quarter.

The Northern Region includes: Greater Sudbury, Sault Ste. Marie, and Thunder Bay
