Regional Building Permits Hold Steady in Q1 2017 Compared to Q1 2016

Total ICI permit values in Ontario in the first quarter of 2017 were almost exactly the same as the first quarter of 2016. The 2017 first quarter permit values increased by less than half of a percent compared to the previous year. Ontario’s industrial permit values which were down significantly in the fourth quarter of 2016 fell by 30% to their lowest point in over three years. The only region with positive news in the industrial sector is Central Ontario where permit values were up by more than a quarter. Commercial permits only increased by 7% in the first quarter and this was confined to the GTA/Central Ontario regions. All of the regions outside of Central Ontario saw commercial permit values fall. Institutional permit values increased in almost every region except London. Education projects have been a key driver of institutional activity across the province.
