NEW PROVINCIAL FUNDING FOR SCHOOLS FOCUSES ON GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE

A new plan to make Ontario schools greener and “better places to learn” will create construction opportunities for a variety of trade contractors especially those involved in retrofitting for high-efficiency lighting and energy efficient windows.

In making the announcement last month, the Ontario Government announced it will spend $1.4 billion for repairs and renewal this year including $200 million from the new Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund (GGRF) to install energy-efficient building elements such as high-efficiency lighting, building automation systems, energy-efficient windows and solar energy and geothermal systems.  Other funds will be used to repair and upgrade elements such as roofs, flooring and plumbing systems.

In making the announcement, Premier Kathleen Wynne noted that over half of the schools in Ontario were built more than 40 years ago.  The reality she said, “is those physical plants are starting to break down and require repair.

The Toronto District School Board will receive the largest portion of the funds – $50 million.  According to the Ontario Ministry of Education, a total of 72 school boards throughout the Province will receive funding with larger allocations going to the following boards:

  • Toronto DSB     $50.2 million
  • Peel DSB     $12.9 million
  • Ottawa-Carleton DSB     $10.5 million
  • Thames Valley DSB     $9.1 million
  • Toronto Catholic DSB     $7.1 million
  • Durham DSB     $5.2 million
  • Greater Essex County DSB     $5.1 million
  • Hamilton-Wentworth DSB     $4.6 million
