Overall, ICI permit values in Kingston increased by 16% compared to last year’s June-August period. After several barren years, Kingston’s industrial sector saw some life with two new projects receiving permits. A new food processing facility and municipal water supply facility were each issued permits valued at just under $5 million. Although it appears the industrial sector saw a massive increase in permitting, it should be noted that over the same period last year, only $1 million in permits were issued. Contrasting the industrial sector`s growth, Kingston`s commercial and institutional sectors both saw significant declines in permit values. Each of these sectors only had about $5 million worth of permits. Over the next several years, power infrastructure projects are forecasted to be a major source of activity in the Kingston metropolitan area. The most significant, TransCanada’s $1.6 billion natural gas pipeline project, is scheduled to begin construction in late-2017.
