Greater Sudbury’s ICI permit values declined 18% compared to the June-August period last year. Between the ICI sectors, permit activity in Greater Sudbury was polarized. Commercial permit values increased 87%, while industrial and institutional permit values both declined to their lowest levels in years. Industrial permit values fell by 79%, and total permit values for the calendar year so far were at their lowest since 2004.
Institutional permit values declined 41% to their lowest level over the June-August period since 2008. Greater Sudbury’s institutional sector will be seeing more activity in the coming months though. Government funding was recently announced to support Laurentian University’s building program. Several projects, including a new Research, Innovation and Engineering Centre are scheduled to be completed in 2018. The total value of Laurentian’s building program is $60 million.
