ICI permits in Oshawa increased significantly in the past six months. Total ICI permit values increased by 43% compared to the previous August-January (2015-16) period. Permits in both the commercial and institutional sector more than doubled. Institutional permit values increased by nearly 150%, and commercial permit values by 125%. Industrial permit values declined dramatically, from $47 million in the previous August-January period, to only $7 million in the past six months. This does not mean that there hasn’t been a lot of industrial work in the Oshawa area. The massive Darlington Nuclear refurbishment began in November, but for the most part, this project isn’t captured by municipal building permits.
