As a result of the 2016 census, Statistics Canada elevated Belleville to “Census Metropolitan Area” status. This means that going forward, Statistics Canada will be publishing Belleville’s ICI building permit statistics and the OCS will be able to provide analysis. Since only data from January 2017 onward is available it won’t be possible to do a year-over-year comparison until 2018.
Total ICI permit values in Belleville for January-February amounted to $14 million. Industrial permit values totaled $11 million, but this was almost entirely due to one project: a $10.3 million expansion at the Proctor & Gamble plant. Belleville’s commercial and institutional sectors were issued permits totalling $1.4 million and $1.6 million respectively. In December, prior to the availability of Stats Canada data, a $15 million permit was issued for arena alterations to accommodate Belleville’s new AHL hockey team.
