Total ICI permit values increased by 154% in Kingston in the January-July period compared to last year. Over 70% of Kingston’s ICI permit values were in the institutional sector. Institutional permit values, which increased five fold compared to last year’s January-July period, were driven by postsecondary education projects. Queen’s University’s Innovation & Wellness Centre project was issued a $57 million permit in May, while a project at St. Lawrence College received a $20 million permit. Both schools are in the midst of major expansion projects. Kingston’s commercial sector has also been strong so far this year, will permit values up 65% compared to last year’s January-July period. Industrial permit values in Kingston declined by 77%, although towards the end of 2016, Kingston experienced significant industrial permit activity due to a wastewater treatment plant project.
