Institutional and Industrial Activity Continues to Drive Growth in Central Ontario While Commercial Sector Remains Steady

Total ICI permit values in Central Ontario’s eight metro areas have increased by almost one-third so far this year, led by the industrial and institutional sectors. Commercial permit values were down in most of the region’s metro areas, held up by a 7% increase in Toronto and significant increases in the St-Catharines-Niagara and Brantford metro areas. Industrial permit values increased by 72% in Toronto and more than doubled in the Kitchener-Cambridge-Waterloo metro area, while also increasing significantly in some smaller markets: Barrie, Oshawa, and St. Catharines-Niagara. Institutional permit values increased by 83% in Toronto, doubled in Kitchener-Cambridge-Waterloo, and increased many times over in Barrie, Brantford, Guelph.
